| Economic Brief - Ian James: Economic Sub Program, National Vegetable Industry Development Program | | Little cheer in retail sales Retail trade figures released last week for January provided little cheer for besieged retailers. Retail trade grew an anaemic 0.3 per cent, showing that consumers are being selective in where they spend their money. The overall growth in retail trade was largely caused by a sharp jump in expenditure by consumers in cafes and restaurants, which rose 6.6 per cent. However, all other areas of retail remained weak and expenditure on food retailing, which includes vegetables, showed no growth. Retail trade is better in the mining states of Western Australia and Queensland, but remains particularly weak in south eastern Australia. Investment all about mining Investment figures released during the week show a vote of confidence in Australia's mining boom. Expected capital expenditure for this financial year across the economy is estimated at a whopping $164 billion - a 27 per cent increase on the estimates at the same time last year. However, the investment story is a mixed bag. Most of the expected expenditure is in mining, which accounts for 66 per cent of the expected increase, with the majority of it spent on buildings and structures. The figures on actual expenditure in the December quarter show weakness in investment expenditure in other industries, particularly in buildings and structures, which may indicate that businesses outside of mining remain cautious about prospects going forward. Residential building going nowhere Building approval figures for January were weak, with approvals for houses down slightly and approvals for the more volatile apartments up 1.5 per cent, after a fall the previous month. Home buyers and investors continue to show wariness, with building approvals for houses down 7.4 per cent over the year and approvals for apartments down 23.3 per cent. |
